This 7A38-7000 fitted with a Hirsch 'Rallye' leather strap, listed on eBay yesterday evening, had previously been advertised FS on TZ_UK's Sales Corner, earlier this week, with a somewhat over-optimistic asking price of £100 (subsequently reduced to £90).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161546258477

Up for auction is my 1983 Seiko 7A38-7000 quartz chronograph watch.

The watch has obviously been worn throughout it's life and has a few marks to prove this, the crystal has a slight chip @ the 9 o'clock position and various scratches on it, there is also some discolouration on the lume of the hour markers and hands.

That being said it still looks good for its age and the 15 jewel highly regarded quartz movement is keeping good time.

It comes fitted with a barely worn hirsch rallye strap, there are no box or papers present.

The approx dimensions are;

40mm across, 10mm thick, 41mm lug to lug and 20mm lug width.

The watch will be sent (uk only) Royal Mail special delivery.

Thanks for looking!

Here's a stainless 7A38-7000 listed earlier this afternoon by a Thai eBay seller - sold as is for parts or repair, in need of some TLC.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171624264052

The chrono' fault might be an easy fix. In the last two photos, there are a couple of nasty scratches on the case-back and on the underside of one of the lugs. So the seller has clearly tried opening it up himself. Did he succeed ? Pity there's no photo of the movement backplate. :/

That eBay auction for the 7A38-7000, in need of some remedial work, by a Thai eBay seller ended a couple of moments ago.

It sold for $82.00 (equivalent to approx. £55) after 10 bids.

I see that one's finally attracted a bid. This potentially rather nicer example listed yesterday evening by a UK seller may struggle to.

Men’s Vintage Large Seiko Chronograph 7A38-7000 Day/Date WR Quartz Watch.

That's it - just one photo and a single line of description.

Meanwhile I notice that late yesterday evening, UK eBay seller jam2201 revamped their listing for their 7A38-7000 (once again):

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemRevisionDetails&item=191469554696

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191469554696

Adding the full complement of 12 photos (though most are stll grainy and some pretty lacklustre):

.... and adding a rather fuller description:

Seiko Men's Quartz Chronograph with Tachymeter Graduated Dial

The Watch Is In Full Functioning Order and Keeps Perfect Time

The Dial Is Black Colour in Excellent Condition with Luminous Hands Hour Markers, Day/ Date Window and 3 Sub Dials

The Case Back Reads: Seiko Stainless Steel Water Resistant 302855 Japan 7A38 - 7000 A5

Diameter Measures 40mm Not Including the Crown

The Crystal Is In Excellent Clear Condition with No Visible Scratches

Original Seiko Signed Stainless Steel Bracelet

In V. G. Cosmetic Condition and Full Working Order- Rare Find in This Condition

Manual / Instructions can be downloaded: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f9/seiko-7a38-chronograph-manual-87529.html

Original Large Vintage Seiko Box Is Listed Separately If Interested

Please Review All Photos as They Form Part of the Description

Please Have a Look at My Other Listings and Feel Free To Ask Any Questions

Unfortunately they've done nothing about reducing the somewhat over-optimistic opening bid price.

PS - Incidentally, the 'Original Large Vintage Seiko Box' mentioned above is NOT original to this watch - it's a later 1990's style box.

A couple of slightly belated results on those two eBay auctions for stainless 7A38-7000's.

Not susprisingly, despite the additional photos and enhanced description, this one went unsold (and hasn't been relisted yet).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191469554696

Amazingly, in contrast, the other 7A38-7000 (previously unsold on TZ_UK) fitted with a leather strap made £114.00 after 17 bids.

I picked up some unusual visitor traffic from an incoming link (to the website home page, rather than the forum) earlier today.

It's from this thread started by a newbie on a Polish watch forum late yesterday evening:

http://zegarkiclub.pl/forum/topic/115474-seiko-7a38-7000-cechyinformacje/

Seiko 7a38-7000 cechy/informacje

The post translates as:

Posted Yesterday, 23:36

Hey, what can you tell me about 7a38-7000 Seiko watch? I found this at home, replaced the glass and a small backup battery, and had set it up for sale but nothing about this watch I do not know. If I could ask for a more literate friends with some information on this watch, some features when it was produced, and some general "opinion" about it I would be very grateful because they do not know much about watches and the Polish Internet is poor in information about this model.

I attach a photo (mine).

I did register on Zegarkiclub.pl, with a view to posting a reply, including a direct link to this thread (and a couple of others) but ....

the whole site is so riddled with pop-up sponsor advertising (worse so even than WatchUSeek), and Google Translate seems reluctant to work on it, as I don't know a word of Polish, I gave up in disgust.

This stainless 7A38-7000 in reasonably decent cosmetic condition was listed overnight by a US eBay seller - unfortunately another of those short-sighted CONUS only merchants. One thing they don't mention in their description is the loss of matt black paint from the bracelet interconnecting links. Not unusual on this model.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261782634964

Item description:

The item for auction is a used vintage 1983 men's Seiko Quartz Chronograph watch with day and date. 7A38 movement with 7000 case. SN 380203. The watch is running and keeping good time. Day and date dials are working fine. The inset subdials all work except for the minute subdial at 9:00 position, it's not moving. The crystal has some small light scratches. It has a very tiny chip at the 12:00 position, hard to see without a loupe. The case and band have light scratches and wear. Band length is about 7" inside circumference measurement. Some links can be removed but there are no extra links to add. No box or papers. Please review the pictures and ask any questions before bidding. Thanks for looking at our listing. The above US eBay auction for a stainless 7A38-7000 ended in the early hours of this morning (UK time).

It sold for $118.50 (approx. £76.66) after 16 bids. Won, I'm pleased to say by a member of this forum:)

Looks like you'll be able to put your modelling skills to good use on those bracelet joining links, Michael.

This used, but allegedly mint condition stainless 7A38-7000 was listed by an Italian eBay seller around lunchtime today:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281629369027

ITALIANO

ENGLISH

Stunning Seiko 7A38-7000 of the early 80s 100% genuine, in mint conditions, everything works perfectly. Watch never refurbished, it has it's original finish. This watch is equipped with the Seiko 7a38, the first quartz chronograph in the world, and the very best, a masterpiece! The beautiful asimmetricas case like in the tradition of many sports Seiko watches, has shoulders protection for buttons and crown. A classic timepeace of the vintage high grade quarts analogic chronograps. Please look carefully to the pictures, they are an integral part of the description. The watch is sold as is, no return.

Ignore for the moment the newish-looking Sport-Tech presentation box and outer cardboard box - they can be picked up on eBay for as little as 10 Euros. Not that I'm inferring the packaging is not original to this watch (for the Italian market), as it also includes a 7A38 manual, but before parting with that kind of money for a used watch, I'd personally want to see some better close-up photos of it.

Indeed, Don - and there it was - Gone ! :/ Here's how it went down. Someone had already made an the seller an offer (as can be seen from my screen print above). Regardless of the lack of decent photos, I cheekily offered 200 Euros. The seller countered with 300 Euros - and at the same time presumably made the same counter-offer to the other interested party (whose offer was then still pending). I counter-offered with 250, meeting them halfway, but when I refreshed the screen 5 minutes later, I was met with this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281629369027

I can't confirm that It did actually sell for 300 Euros because Goofbid's eBay Best Offer History tool is still currently only showing my declined counter-offer (250 @ 3:27pm). Still - no great loss as far as I'm concerned; like you - I really didn't need another one. :P

Nearly three months later it's back on eBay, re-listed yesterday evening - just like I knew it would be eventually. ;)

The seller may have changed the title slightly and be using a different eBay ID bass2201 (instead of jam2201 used previously) ....

But you've only got to scroll through the (same) grainy lacklustre photos to quickly recognise it as the same stainless 7A38-7000.

I'm not going to bother re-posting the photos or copying the description over again. You can scroll back up the page to January 7th.

Dunno who this UK eBay seller thinks he's fooling by switching back and forth between his two rather similar eBay ID's.

It's back again - re-listed by jam2201 this time.

Some eBay sellers write the funniest things in their eBay listings.

This 'Head only' stainless 7A38-7000 was listed by a UK eBay seller watty10_1 a couple of days ago.

Note the "1 spring bar missing" in the item condition, but no mention whatsoever of the missing bracelet.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331533807648

For sale is a Seiko Stainless Steel Water Resistant 300218 Japan 7A38 - 7000 A5.

It is a Men's Quartz Chronograph with Tachymeter Ring

The watch does not have a battery so that I have not been able to see if it works.

Condition is very good with only scratches to the "glass" and small age related marks to the caseback

The Dial Is Black Colour in Excellent Condition with Luminous Hands Hour Markers, Day/ Date Window

The Case Back Reads: Seiko Stainless Steel Water Resistant 300218 Japan A Stainless Steel 7A38 - 7000 A5

No attempt was made to clean or polish. Article is sold "as is" - I can ship worldwide, please ask for Postal Costs

Whereas the watch head generally appears to be in good condition, most of the lume batons (apart from 5, 8 and 12 o'clock) are badly discoloured - a sign of moisture ingress or attack by battery acid fumes. Note also that the chrono' centre seconds finger tension spring has been deftly displaced. Just as well the watch doesn't have a battery fitted, otherwise I'd be adding it onto this thread:

The all-too-common Displaced Finger Tension Spring chrono' sweep hand

That stainless 7A38-7000 first listed by UK eBay seller jam2201 at the beginning of January remains unsold. I noticed that it had been re-listed again, late yesterday evening with a couple of slight changes - not to the still somewhat over-optimistic opening bid price, but by adding three new photos of the watch: in and perched on top of that presentation box. One of these has now become the primary image; the other two are interspersed with some of his original lacklustre grainy images.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191576652837

The other change I spotted was to the description, the original version of which included the sentence:

Original Large Vintage Seiko Box Is Listed Separately If Interested

This latest version states:

Comes with original Large Vintage Seiko Presentation Box- used

You may recal that I wrote earlier, at the top of the page ....

PS - Incidentally, the 'Original Large Vintage Seiko Box' mentioned above is NOT original to this watch - it's a later 1990's style box.

As you can see from the seller's new photos, the 7A38-7000 not only doesn't appear to sit well, it looks a bit lost in it !

I don't know anything about this watch. It's yet another item that we have gotten from my grandpa's estate. It does not run. The battery is probably dead but I don't know if there are any other issues. The back of the watch says "Seiko water resistant 411315 Japan A" "Stainless steel 7A38-7000 A6". Like I said, I know nothing about this item. I've described it to the best of my ability and tried to take good pictures. Thanks for looking!
