Last Saturday, 30th November, a two-tone stainless and gold 7A38-6090 SAA116J was listed on eBay by a UK seller:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310809908973

seiko chronograph

HI YOU ARE BIDDING ON A MANS SEIKO CHRONOGRAPH SQ100, IN GOOD USED CONDITION, THERE IS SOME WEAR (CONSISTANT WITH AGE) AND GLASS HAS A COUPLE OF HAIRLINE SCRATCHES, VERY HARD TO PICK UP WITHOUT A MAGNIFYING GLASS. ALL THE DIALS WORK BUT THE SECOND HAND HAS JUST STOPPED WORKING, MIGHT JUST NEED A NEW BATTERY ? CLEAN. BUT STILL KEEPS GOOD TIME, NUMBERS ON BACK ARE 7A38-6090 A4 &822245. BOXED BUT NO PAPERWORK

...........................just replaced the battery and min/hand seems to be working although i do not realy understand how a chronometer works, i think the problem is getting the correct battery fitted.

The seller made a revision to the description yesterday evening around 9:20pm (presumably the part in lower case) ....

Then ended the listing in the early hours of this morning: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310809908973

From memory, a US based forum member was looking for one of these - for use as a dial / movement donor for his own watch.*

My apologies for not remembering who you were, but I wouldn't have recommended this particular example (to anybody) anyway.

Apart from the would-be seller's somewhat ponderous ill-informed description, the sub-dials appear to be discoloured in his photos -

(I've only bothered posting 5 of the 10 included in the listing) - indicating either possible previous battery leakage or moisture ingress.

*Belated Edit: it was forum member KWJCDon who wrote the comment below on his profile on 14th July (hence my memory lapse):

Live in Key West. I have a gold 7a38-6090 which needs new guts inside. I am hoping to secure a similar one to make one out of two.

It was re-listed earlier this evening: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310819448158 The latter part of the revised description now reads:

.............. i have relisted this because i had said i thought the second hand had stopped working, but after looking on utube have now realised the minute hand is not suppose to work all the time. (what a doughnut),

Indeed, what a confused doughnut !

The Japanese 'store' seller quickdo2 who appears to have an unnatural predeliction for using PINK headers in their horrendously cluttered listings on Yahoo Japan, has recently listed a stainless 7A38-6090 fitted with an incorrect (aftermarket) replacement bracelet.

http://page17.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v353000365

セイコー クロノグラフ SQ100 腕時計 クォーツ 7A38-6090 ◎■

The translated description is full of the usual caveats I've become accustomed to seeing them use, and should serve as a warning.

If not, then their optimistic opening bid price of 18,519 Yen should hopefully be enough to deter all but the most unwitting punter.

Edit: 3 days later, opening bid price had been reduced to 15,000 Yen: http://page17.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v353000365

A tidy looking example of a two-tone gunmetal / stainless 7A38-6090 was listed on eBay overnight by a NY-based seller. Unusual, in that these somewhat quirky dressy models seem almost exclusively to turn up on eBay Germany. Don't know where the seller gets the 'Age of Discovery' connection thing from though.  Their Buy-it-Now price is set at a probably over-optimistic $250. It remains to be seen if he succumbs to a lower offer. The watch is being offered through eBay's GSP shipping program which makes it 'uneconomic' for European buyers once you add on the $61.90 import charges and $20.23 shipping.

One question it always pays to ask with this particular model is the length of the bracelet / size of wrist it should fit (because of the clasp design). Sometimes you can work it out for yourself, by counting the number of links. Unfortunately not in this seller's photos.

Strange. :/ Only three months after the last one, another stainless 7A38-6090 was listed on Yahoo Japan a couple of days ago.

http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r116457164

SEIKO 7A38-6090 SQ100 クオーツ クロノグラフ アンティーク

Google translates the seller's description from Japanese (badly as usual) as:

The pain aging, due to the use, there are flaws. Are many glass scratches (It is not a cloudy) It is good precision operation. Is the belt buckle rather hard. Arm circumference 18.5cm about. I am going to send it out in the letter pack. No person who understands the old clock, please refrain from more nervous. It is a method of payment or simple settlement JNB bank. It has a weekday job, thank you because you have 3 days to ship after payment is confirmed. Thank you no claim no return.

The auction ended around lunchtime today. It sold for only 6250 Yen (equivalent to approx. $61.25 USD / £35.70 GBP) after 3 bids.

Would-be profiteering Japanese re-seller serena_special (they of the crappy photos and stupid asking prices infamy) is back again.

This time with a stainless 7A38-6090 fitted with an incorrect replacement bracelet - one which looks all too familiar.

I'm not going to bother copying or translating their description - because it's the same generic B/S blurb they churn out every time.

Scroll up the page and you'll immediately see this is the same watch that YJ seller Quickdo2 couldn't shift for 15,000 Yen back in April.

Serena_special's asking price ?  60,000 Yen !

Needless to say, it's since remained unsold - and in their typical stubborn manner YJ seller serena_special has continued to re-list it over and over, ad nauseam, at the same ridiculous Buy-it-Now price. This morning I noticed a subtle change to the latest re-listing:

However - I don't think we've quite seen the last of this one yet. :/ They've got a reserve price set.

Translate the listing: http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n139148912 and beneath the 1000 Yen opening bid price it states:

※ "current price" has not reached the lowest bid price.

Although the German seller has unfortunately screwed up the title of his listing ( 6080 ??) this is probably one of the nicest used examples of a two-tone 7A38-6090 that I've ever seen listed on eBay. I could almost be tempted myself, if I didn't already have one.

Despite the incorrectly titled listing, I thought that two-tone 7A38-6090 might have found itself a buyer. It would seem not. :/

Not that the original asking price of 125 Euros was particularly unreasonable, given the nice condition, the seller added a 'Best Offer' button to the listing after a week or so. One person made a couple of offers, which were declined. Unfortunately the lack of interest appears to have prompted the seller to subsequently increase the Buy-it-Now price to 199 Euros.

While idly browsing 7A38 images on Flickr this lunchtime, I belatedly came across 3 high resolution photos of a gunmetal two-tone 7A38-6090 uploaded by Wai Phyo (a.k.a eBay re-seller Worldwideweb66) to his 'Wai's Watch Museum' photostream.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/with/14754704927

They were taken on August 16 2014, so this is likely the same gunmetal 7A38-6090 which first appeared on eBay in June 2014.

Indeed, that 7A38-6090 was re-listed and sold on August 9th against a best offer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141348298530

Wai's Flickr image captions read:

Triple color (Gold+Silver+Black) SEIKO 7A38-6090 SQ100 Series Gentlemen's Chronograph watch.

1/10s up to 30min Chronograph. DAY-DATE window is on the 3 o'clock position.

Band is bracelet style two tone(Silver+Black) color metal band.

Crown & Pushers are gold tone color. Case is solid stainless steel silver color. Bezel is black color metal. Hands and hour markers are gold color.

Crystal is original SEIKO domed crystal. 100% Made in Japan high end quality. Super rare to find! Produced in 1988.

My Note: I love this watch. Design and Size are very attractive. Very comfort to wear on my wrist. Especially, original domed crystal is so beautiful. Highly recommended.

Thanks for visiting to my watch museum.

I can't say I've him (re)listing this one since, so does it mean he's actually kept one for a change, instead of selling it on ? :/

The German seller of that rather nice two-tone 7A38-6090 re-listed it once again as a Buy-it-Now @ 199 Euros for another 30 days without success - not even receiving any lowball offers the second time around: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201252737423

Then after a lapse of a couple of weeks, they re-listed it as a 10-day low-start no reserve auction, which ended about 20 minutes ago:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201280172444

It sold for 111.11 Euros (approx.  £81.71) after 59 bids (41 of those made by a zero-feedback, possible shill bidder).

During my self-imposed (and as it transpired, somewhat short-lived) posting hiatus, a week ago today, I inadvertently omitted to update this thread with the details of a fairly tidy-looking stainless 7A38-6090 which had then recently been listed on eBay Germany.

Zustand siehe Bilder.

The auction ended earlier this evening - a couple of hours ago, in fact, selling for 103.57 Euros (approx. £74.21) after 12 bids:

It transpires that San-Francisco based would-be profiteering eBay re-seller Wai Phyo (a.k.a. worldwideweb66) actually managed to keep that 7A38-6090 in his 'Museum' collection for a whole 12 months, before attempting to move it on for a fat profit.

He listed it on eBay overnight, using exactly the same three photos from his Flickr account (so presumably the same watch which he paid less than $250 for in August 2014) with a preposterous Buy-it-Now asking price of $750 !! :o

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131590877750

Although there's no evidence of wear in Wai's typically warmly lit, soft-focussed photos (and conveniently no photo of the case-back),

his description includes: Case & band has very very tiny scratches from very little usage. Please check the photos.

Which is consistent with the condition shown in the original eBay seller's photos from June 2014 near the the top of this page.

PS - I didn't miss it, Wai. ;)

Needless to say, after that 10-day listing and another 4 subsequent Buy-it-Now re-listings @ $750 it remained stolidly unsold.

Wai Phyo has most recently re-listed the 7A38-6090 as an auction, with an opening bid price of 'only' $275. Any takers ?

Here's the latest re-listing, created in the early hours: this time with a (fairly pointless) Buy-it-Now option for $300 added:

Wai Phyo's latest re-listing for this 7A38-6090 ended in the early hours of this morning, with the watch finally selling for $283:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131630962550

There were a total of 10 bids placed. For most of the week, it remained at the opening bid price of $199; the bulk of the bidding took place yesterday under the cloak of the private listing - bidders' identities protected auction. I suspect an element of shill bidding was involved (which of course thanks to this secretive modus operandi, there's no way of proving), but then the winning bid was placed in the final 10 seconds, so someone obviously thought it was worth that price. Makes you wonder why they didn't bid on it in the closing seconds of the previous auction, when it could have been bought for $199.

This two-tone 7A38-6090, fitted with a notched tan leather strap in place of the original Seiko p/n S1002C bracelet, was listed on eBay yesterday evening by an Italian seller. When first uploaded, it had a Buy-it-Now option for a somewhat over-optimistic 149 Euros.

The above eBay auction for a two-tone 7A38-6090 fitted with a leather strap ended about an hour ago. It sold for 43.50 Euros (approx. £34) after 14 bids - and some 100 Euros less than the seller's initial 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now asking price.

Athough I didn't spot it before (because there's no mention of the model number in the title nor description), I suspect this two-tone 7A38-6090 was briefly listed concurrently, around the same time, by another wishful Italian eBay seller. Amusingly, once again, their 'pie-in-the sky' Buy-it-Now price is set at 149 (but in $ US, rather than Euros). But this example, which appears to be fitted with a notched rubber strap, isn't in as good cosmetic condition as the previous one - it's covered in light scratches.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162056625141

The seller's description is basically a load of utter tosh. Using his own ranking, I wouldn't rate it any better than a 2.5+ / 10.

Consider the One Star eBay review already written. :P

No idea why they should keep popping up in Japan (this is the third or fourth example I've seen), because it was ostensibly a (European) export model, but another stainless 7A38-6090 has just been listed on Yahoo Japan auctions earlier today.
