Seiko 7A38 - by the numbers

Don. Thanks for not bidding against me. You may not have driven up the price - that was already taken care of by the shill bidder who regularly (and exclusively) bids on this Italian seller's auctions. But then another bona fide bidder sniped @ 240 Euros. So I guess it wasn’t too bad a price. Checking my records, I paid 131 Euros for my previous example back in August 2009. This one’s in better cosmetic condition, but not certainly not as mint as it might have appeared in the seller's photos. It arrived this morning, doing the two-second two-step (low battery indicator), so I’m even less impressed by this Italian eBay seller.

Having bought that German magazine Seiko advert for the 7A28-7120 SAA044J last year, I'd already been planning this photo before the watch even arrived. 

Today's weather is overcast and it really needed more light to compose a decent shot. This is the best of a few attempts (hand held). If you zoom in on the actual watch, you'll see I'd set the day / date to MIT / 2, same as the image in the advert. The watch may have come from an Italian eBay seller, but like most other examples seen, it has an English / German day wheel.

Here's a slightly different wrist shot to the one I posted earlier in the WRUW thread.

It better shows some of the light scuffing to the laquered bezel. Fortunately I have a NOS bezel in my spares stock (which I'd considered fitting to my previous lesser condition example). Much of a pain as they are to fit (due to the risk of marking the case coating), this one will be receiving it in due course.

Having recently acquired the above very nice example, it's not as if I really needed another. But I do hate missing a 'bargain'. Yesterday evening, a German eBay seller listed a decent looking titanium 7A38-7120, with a very reasonable Buy-it-Now price of 135 Euros - and also the option to make an offer. The listing was only live for 20 minutes, during which time it received a mere 13 views. So it was long gone by the time I got home and checked my eBay notifications.

Großer Reset (Drücker unten rechts 2 Sek.) natürlich auch mit einer Zeigerdrehung der großen,-kleinen Sekunde und kl. Minute auf 12 Uhr.

Ohne Seiko Box.

Bitte bedenken Sie, dass es sich um eine gebrauchte Uhr handelt, welche nicht auf Wasserdichtheit getestet wurde.

Auch bedenken Sie bitte, dass es keine neue Uhr ist und über die viele Jahre getragen wurde (nicht von mir) welches sich auf den

allgemeinen Zustand auswirkt d.h. Kratzer an diversen stellen Gehäuse (auch Goldabrieb), Boden, Lünette, Armband (auch stretch an diesem)

WatchCount.com's Look-up tool reveals it actually sold for an offer of 120 Euros !

The eBay Purchase History shows the canny buyer made the seller three offers in under a minute, before being accepted. 

Surprisingly, that same titanium 7A38-7120 is back on eBay again, re-listed about 10 minutes ago, by the German eBay seller. The re-listing details are pretty much the same as before, except the Buy-it-Now price has crept up slightly from the previous 135 to 150 Euros.

There's an interesting little addition to the description, which might help explain:

The 'canny buyer' shown in the eBay Purchase History of the previous listing (in encrypted abbreviated form as i***n (194) was evidently the Italian eBay profiteering re-seller simone00simone (who currently has the same feedback number of 194).

Strange that he should renege on the transaction after securing the watch for such a good price. I can guess what some of you may be thinking; hang on a minute, didn't you recently buy your titanium 7A38-7120 from Simone ? Indeed I did - and the first thing that occured to be was that it was quite possibly the same titanium 7A38-7120 that was 'back doored' off eBay Germany in September last year (see the previous page). I've studied both sets of photos - plus naturally the watch in the metal and am reasonably convinced it isn't, but knowing his usual modus operandi, it still leaves a nasty taste. 

Well, that didn't last long.  Presumably 'back-doored' by someone Simone.

This titanium 7A38-7120 was listed this morning by a Spanish eBay seller. Once again, a highly over-optimistic 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of 320 Euros - with the option to make an offer, but with an equally ludicrous shipping cost of 65 Euros !  It appears to be in decent average used condition, with the usual scuffs to the lacquered bezel and some loss of gold plating from the bracelet link ornaments. The seller has included a 9th photo of a Seiko user manual (for the 7Txx series), which clearly doesn't belong to this watch.

The eBay Purchase History shows a number of mostly expired offers dating back to last September.

This WatchCount.com search result confirms it sold as a Buy-it-Now for 320 Euros.

I've been away from my home PC for the first three days of this week, thus I'm now posting in catch-up mode. So my apologies if these threads get updated in anything other than correct chronological order. Indeed, I nearly missed spotting a couple of eBay listings, because they were created and ended while I was 'out of the office'. This was one of them. On Tuesday morning, Italian eBay seller simone00simone listed another titanium 7A38-7120 as a Buy-it-Now for 275 Euros. It appeared to be in no better than average worn condition. Note the SQ clasp has been re-brushed. This is of course the very same titanium 7A38-7120, case-back s/n 685160, which he evidently subsequently 'back-doored' off eBay Germany, presumably for 150 Euros or less, at the end of March.

Ich biete hier eine SEIKO ANALOG QUARZUHR mit Chronograph an. 7A38.

Bei der Uhr handelt es sich um ein Erbstück. Es ist die Originalverpackung, die Bedienungsanleitung, sowie die Rechnung aus dem Jahr 1988 über 998,00 DM vorhanden.

Die Uhr wurde bei einem Juwelier überprüft und am 16.08.2019 mit einer neuen Batterie versehen. (Quittung wird mitgeliefert.)

Die Uhr befindet sich in einem absolut tadellosen Zustand. Die einzigen Gebrauchsspuren sind an der Schließe des Armbandes zu finden. Für das Armband werden noch Ersatzglieder mitgeliefert.

Technische Daten:

1. Zeitanzeige: Stunde, Minute, Sekunde

2. Stoppuhrfunktion: Minuten, Sekunden und 5/100 Sekunden bis zu 30 Minuten.

3. Zählerfunktion: Drei verschiedene Zählwerke stehen zur Verfügung.

4. Anzeige für den Batteriewechsel: Wenn die Batterielebensdauer sich dem Ende nähert, bewegt sich der Sekundenzeiger nur noch im Abstand von zwei Sekunden weiter.

Hello everyone, 7A38 newbie here!  I am on the lookout for a good condition 7A38-7120.  Is there anywhere other than ebay that yall suggest searching?  This doesn't seem like the most popular model and theres only 1 on ebay but it doesn't look the best condtion.

Ah thank you for the heads up!  I saw the one from France but didn't see the German one.  Guess I need to start searching 'titan' and not just titanium!

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he ships to the USA.  I sent him a message to make sure that is the case.
