This average worn condition 7A38-7070 was listed yesterday lunchtime by a German eBay seller, with a somewhat over-optimistic opening bid price of 333 Euros. I haven't bothered uploading all the seller's photos, because the 3 other similar 'head on' shots are badly out of focus. The clasp has clearly been buffed (rather amateurishly) in an attempt to remove the usual 'Desk Diver' marks.

Earlier this afternoon I wasted a couple of hours trawling though ended listings on eBay Italy, looking for anything I might have missed. I found this listing for a 7A38-7070, fitted with a non-original Seiko p/n B1688S replacement bracelet. Two reasons I hadn't spotted it before: Sport 100!!! (with exclamation marks and without the 's') and the seller's model number typo in the description !

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201890688398

SEIKO CRONOGRAFO SPORT 100!!!

OTTIME CONDIZIONI, GHIERA LEGGERMENTE CONSUMATA, OROLOGIO FUNZIONANTE. CINTURINO SEIKO.

MODELLO 7438-7070. N.738170.

BELLISSIMO!!! WATER RESISTENT, STAINLESS STEEL!!!

It sold as a Buy-it-Now for 169 Euros on 15th April.

This was what reminded me ....

A 'head only, listed by a US eBay seller, in the early hours of Monday morning - being offered through eBay's GSP programme.

At first glance (from the top), it might appear a tidy case, but the watch has suffered from a horrendously terminal battery leak. :(

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322516464589

The above US eBay auction for a 'head only' 7A38-7070 parts watch, ended late last night, selling for $134.07 after 27 bids.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322516464589

I'm not sure I'd have wanted to pay any more for it, as a 'project watch', but it would have been nice to have been able to place a bid. Despite offering it through the GSP programme, the inept eBay seller appeared to be blocking bids from outside CONUS.

This well-worn one-owner 7A38-7070 was listed yesterday evening by a UK eBay seller, with an over-optimistic opening bid price of £275 and only one rather uninspiring photo, which it has to be said, belies the seller's description of its condition.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142381168247

The above UK eBay auction for a well-worn 7A38-7070 ended yesterday evening, selling for the opening bid price of £275. It had looked that it might go unsold - the seller had added 'Am open to sensible offers' onto the end of the description. But then someone, obviously keen to buy, placed 2 bids in the closing minutes - indeed their second 'safety' snipe bid was placed in the final second.

A foregone conclusion: the original eBay listing ended with it unsold. The German seller re-listed it twice more as (only) 1-day auctions, with the same 333 Euros opening bid price - and the same predictable outcome. He ended the second re-listing early, this morning. To quote my stock sarcastic phrase in these situations: Presumably the error was in the pricing. :P

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262999551502

He re-listed it soon afterwards, with the opening bid price reduced from the 'think of a number' 333 to a more sensible 222 Euros.

I'd wager it's likely to attract at least one bid this time around. ;)

The German eBay seller continued to re-list it on a (still on daily basis), to no avail. :/

By the middle of last week, he'd further reduced the opening bid price from 222 Euros to 199 Euros.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263003536504

Having call it wrong previously, I was saying nothing.

The seller went on to re-list it twice more at the same reduced opening bid price .... and still no bids - it remained unsold. :(

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263006883336

Strange how this panned out - with no apparent interest, even @ 199 Euros, which I wouldn't consider unreasonable, particularly as another example in similar (if not poorer condition) had sold on eBay UK only a week ago for £275 (as an opening bid).

Here's a case of 'Now you see it - Now you don't'.

This average worn condition 7A38-7070 was listed sometime overnight by a Mexican eBay seller, supposedly as a 5-day auction, with an opening bid price of $0.99 cents.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142413190114

Please, make your best bid!!!

Description:

Working Excellent. The dial is in excellent conditions. Some little marks over the watch. Running excellent. The strap is the original (don´t have all the pieces). Please Check The Photos. In a used watch, the water resistance is not guaranteed. Please Check The Photos.

Please, check the photos before the purchase, because there is no returns. Maybe the description lack all the information, but if in the photos is showed some characteristics that affect the function or the aesthetic of the product, no returns are accepted. Ask for all, please.

Shipment 2 days after the payment, please, ask for the tracking number. The shipment could be delayed 1 to 2 months, please, take in account. The seller ended the listing in the early hours of this morning, apparently without any bids having been placed, because of an alleged error in the listing.

Sold off eBay against a back door offer, perhaps ? Your guess is as good as mine. :/ But did you check the photos:P

Here are a couple of eBay listings for less than stellar examples of the 7A38-7070, by shall we say confused eBay sellers.

Particularly as both their listings include photos of the watches' case-backs, clearly showing the model number 7A38-7070.

Coincidentally, both watches are fitted with non-original generic replacement stainless bracelets, in place of the Seiko p/n B1271S, and are described as such by both sellers.

The first was listed earlier this week as a 'Rare Seiko Sports 7A48' ...., by a UK eBay seller:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182620970537

Seiko Sports 7A48 chronograph watch 1980's

with instruction manual

Strap has been replaced

New battery fitted but no longer watertight (can be made watertight again)

Very good condition for age.

The second was listed at lunchtime today as 'Seiko 7A28-7040 Speedy Bishop' ...., by a keyword spamming German eBay seller:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152590607971

The 'Now you see it - Now you don't' 7A38-7070 offered briefly by a Mexican eBay seller earlier last week is back again, re-listed in the early hours of this morning. I can't see any differences between the photos and description of this and the previous listing, so I won't bother to repost the details. Just be sure to check the photos ! :P

The aforementioned UK eBay auction for a 7A38-7070 fitted with a non-original bracelet (and mistakenly titled as a 'Rare Seiko Sports 7A48', I suspect by the confused seller's inclusion of a 7A48 manual) ended earlier this evening, selling for £98.10 after 16 bids.

This 7A38-7070 fitted with what appears to be a black rubber NATO style strap was listed yesterday evening by a Canadian seller, with an opening bid price of $150 (US). It does come supplied with the original Seiko bracelet, albeit one that looks a bit short and tired. I've only bothered posting 6 of the seller's 10 photos, because a few are quite similar.

I've lost count of the number of times that German eBay seller multigames762012 has relisted his 7A38-7070. :/

It sold again yesterday, for the opening bid price of 199 Euros. Let's hope that's the last time I have to mention it.

The above quoted eBay listing failed to attract any bids. The US eBay seller bajabello relisted it twice more, with the same opening bid price of $300 and the same fairly predictible outcome. The second re-listing ended yesterday, with the watch still unsold:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253000833189

Overnight he re-listed it for a third time, with the opening bid price reduced to a more sensible $200. It now has 2 bids.

Funny what a difference a lower opening bid price makes. That re-listed US eBay auction for a 7A38-7070 ended just before midnight (UK time) last night, making $316 after 16 bids. Yet three times previously it had gone unsold @ $300. The wonders of eBay.
