Readers may have noticed that I've made a couple of new posts today, but without embedding any photos or the customary screen prints of eBay listings. My normal preferred method of using PhotoBucket to host images seems to have gone awry. Bloody thing keeps re-directing me to the secure login screen (even though I'm already logged in). When I try to upload (single) images using other methods than the usual library pull-down menu, the upload freezes at 90% complete, with a red X - but no error message.

Seems I'm not alone in experiencing this problem. :(

As some of you may have noticed from comments I made in various posts and on my profile recently ....

Photobucket is playing up again. Can't upload photos. Hence the couple of incomplete posts. GRRRR !

PhotoBucket suffered another bout of problems in the latter part of last week, which continued through the weekend.

It does actually appear to be working again this morning - but for how long is anybody's guess.

Photobucket's resumption of 'normal service' lasted a whole 4½ days !  This morning I can't even login to it !!!

I had so much that I wanted to post this morning, but virtually all my planned posts need new photos uploading.

I'd upload screen prints to show their latest blog status updates (dated May 10th), but you know how it is. :P

PhotoBucket has behaved itself reasonably well over the last month or so. There was another spate of annoying glitches earlier this week, when I left this sarcastic comment on their blog: http://blog.photobucket.com/status/comment-page-1/#comments

However there may be trouble ahead, particularly for any members who use PhotoBucket's advert-riddled Free hosting service.

To expand on the first sentence of my comment, Photobucket automatically collected $29.99 on Sunday 25th June, as a renewal.

In terms of capacity, I'm still well within their limits, having used only 19% of my 22GB entitlement - that's just over 19000 images.

On 28th June PhotoBucket saw fit to change their Terms of Use: http://photobucket.com/terms

The paid service which I have just renewed for 12 months (previously known as Plus20) no longer appears to be an option !! :o

Not only that, but the next highest available level, Plus50 (@ $59.99 / year) doesn't allow any image linking, FFS !!

Based on their new 'Terms of Use', it would appear that PhotoBucket are already holding a number of users to ransom.

See this thread on TZ-UK, started earlier today:  Can't copy photobucket links any more - any ideas?

Also a few more recent comments from PhotoBucket's blog:

In the light of the above, I strongly recommend that members who are PhotoBucket users start looking for alternative hosting.

I just hope the same doesn't happen on our forum. What with Webs crappy unreliable hosting, it might just be the final straw.

I haven't spotted any instances on our forum, yet .... touch wood, but PhotoBucket's 'Ransom' image placeholders (where users' previously linked images have been blocked) are now starting to pop up all over the place, particularly on SCWF and TZ-UK watch forums. Here's what to look out for (especially if it's your photos that are affected):

This  is NOT A REAL one !! If anybody spots any such 'Ransome' placeholders in older existing threads, please drop me a PM.

Well I've spotted the first one (by virtue of the fact that I'd noticed this person's Photobucket images were blocked on SCWF).

It's an expired (withdrawn) FS thread for a 7A28-7039, from 2013, by forum member Lewie:

Thread now has 4 'Ransom' placeholders. No biggie in this particular instance, but what a f**king mess it looks now !

Lots of new threads on various watch forums in the last couple of days, bitching about Photobucket's aggressive new policy.

On TZ-UK, the original thread:

Has since been joined by three more:

It's certainly an interesting strategy from Photobucket. I guess that they're already in serious trouble and are rolling the dice.

And it doesn't look that it's going to come up with a 'lucky 7' for them, Lindon. :( Many people are predicting an early demise, through loss of (lots more) users and advertising revenue - saying that this $400 ransom demand exercise is just a last gasp attempt to grab some cash, before they file for bankruptcy.

However reading between the lines, in yet another Photobucket blog article posted on Thursday 6th July, they plan on being around until the end of December 2018. Scroll down the page to the section titled: 3rd Party Hosting Specifics and part 3.

That implies that my 19,000+ photos and the linking thereof (sorry 3rd party hosting) to this forum will theoretically be safe until 31st December 2018. As presumably also will Simon's 'Sir Alan' linked images, who has been a major contributor to this forum. I phoned him on Friday and Simon told me that he's on the Photobucket Plus50 plan - as opposed to the 'now extinct' Plus20 plan that I've only just recently renewed. But assuming they do actually survive to the end of December next year, what happens then ? :/

Unless they re-think their ill-advised revised ToS in the meantime, I suspect they'll be expecting me to upgrade to Plus500.

The answer will be a resounding No Thank You - except in possibly less polite terms - 3 different words. :P

As they say, a picture paints a thousand words. Funnily enough I still have this in my Photobucket album.
