Thank you Don and Phil. I've waited for about three years for this watch. I like a 38-40mm case, which is the perfect size for my wrist. Those 43mm Yemas look like a wall clock on my arm.

As far as repainting...I'm not convinced spray paint works. Needs to be replated. Reminds me of early '70's Porsche "Black Chrome." I do like "Patina"

Don, nice Citizen, nice price! I saw that one in his 'other items for sale'

Pictures to follow upon arrival on Monday.

Another 7A38-6010, suffering from the usual worn black chrome plating and in need of a little TLC, was listed on eBay in the States yesterday evening - offered through eBay's useless GSP program, which STILL won't allow UK bidders to place bids, regardless.

Could possibly be an easy fixer-upper; perhaps the errant pusher circlip is still floating around inside the watch case. :/

The US eBay auction for that 7A38-6010, in need of a little TLC and a pusher circlip, ended about half an hour ago.

It sold for a mere $67.66 (approx. £44.62) after 15 bids - an absolute steal for somebody with the ability to fix it up.

Having thankfully recovered from his major health scare in the second part of last year (2014), erstwhile Australian 7Axx collector Stuart Lennard (ex-forum member 'ginny') has resumed the selling off of his once impressive collection. In the early hours of this morning he listed three 7A38's, including this very tidy looking example of a 7A38-6010.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121653778930

The presence of a case-back sticker and a clearly visible serial number 4N2685 makes it fairly easy to figure out where Stuart bought this 7A38-6010. It was the one sold for $249.95 by US dealer Jeff Resnick in December 2013, which I wrote up in the middle of page 2:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161176111410

As I wrote at the time, December 18, 2013 at 2:23 PM :

This 7A38-6010 was in very good condition, with minimal wear to the vulnerable black chrome plating and on its original bracelet.

Sold in the early hours, yesterday by dealer Jeff Resnick (who no doubt bought it cheaper himself) for a rather more realistic $250.

Well, regardless of the $250 he paid for it 18 months ago, Stuart's 7A38-6010 sold fairly quickly for his $450 B-I-N asking price. :)

That eBay listing for a 7A38-6010 by US seller pmounce (a.k.a. Mike Mounce) ended this afternoon, sold against a Best Offer:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381268290241

Unfortunately, as sometimes happens, Goofbid's eBay Best Offer History tool has failed to record what the offer he accepted was.

Anyone watching the eBay listing would probably have noticed that Mike had dropped the Buy-it-Now price from $225 to $210.

Around the same time, two days ago, he dropped the price on his SCWF FS advert (also originally $225) even lower, to $190:

http://www.thewatchsite.com/8-seiko-citizen-trading-post/168058-sold-seiko-7a38-6010-quartz-chronograph-reduced-190-a.html

So that might be a good indication what it actually sold for.

This 7A38-6010, with rather less rubbing wear to the black chrome coating than most of the tired rubbish we've become accustomed to seeing coming out of the Philippines, was listed overnight by Filipino eBay seller apol_of_your_eyes.

This 7A38-6010 was listed on eBay overnight by another of the Filipino watch botchers - mountapo_merchant (a.k.a. Edmar Duero).

It might appear reasonably tidy at first glance, but the photos deserve close inspection. It's been tarted up somewhat - read badly

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291647918892

Indeed, as the saying goes: a picture paints a thousand words. So where shall we start ? :P

How about with a quote of Phil's post from the top of this page (directed at Paul 'PHK' from Vegas) and the seller's third photo ....

Or in this instance, perhaps not quite so 'brand new', more a case of ....

Check the skilful manner in which the masking was blended (not) and how the gold SEIKO SQ clasp logo has been over-painted.

Then there's the movement:

ORIGINAL QUARTZ MOVEMENT, Cal. 7A38A. Keeps accurate time as we would expect from a quartz movement.

Professionally serviced just recently and New Battery Installed.

Apart from the generally dirty condition of the back-plate, check out the state of some of the inspection holes and the position of the rotary step switch. I suppose this could be considered 'professional' by average Filipino watch botching standards.

Note also the undersize # 399 replacement battery fitted instead of a # 394 (SR936SW). Typical.

Then there's the dial and hands: Dial and Hands are ALL SEIKO ORIGINALS.

Apart from the scabby discoloured lume on most of the hour batons, the hour and minute hands have been re-lumed (badly).

One thing the seller conveniently omits to mention in his description is the bezel insert.

It's a cheap after-market replacement .... Indeed, the same as the ones he flogs himself (read Feiko, rather than genuine Seiko):

That eBay auction for the 'tarted up' 7A38-6010 ended in the early hours of this morning. Right up until the last half hour, no bids had been placed. But then someone caved in, only to be sniped in the closing seconds. Sold for $127.50 (approx. £86.50) after two bids.

Yesterday evening, an intriguing listing for an almost mint 7A38-6010 appeared on eBay in the States. It's already garnered quite a bit of interest. By this morning, the listing has twice as many - 14 watchers. The seller claims that "THIS WATCH IS IN EXCEPTIONAL ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION", which indeed it mostly appears to be - except that it's fitted with a Seiko rubber dive strap, instead of the correct Seiko p/n G1157F bracelet. Unfortunately, it's being offered through eBay's GSP program, which pushes the not unreasonable $250 Buy-it-Now price to $335.50 (landed) for any potential European buyers. :(

MINT VINTAGE Seiko Sports 100 Chronograph 7A38-6010 Quartz 38mm Mens Watch. THIS WATCH IS IN EXCEPTIONAL ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION WITH NOT A SCRATCH OR MARK ON IT. THE WATCH MAINTAINS ITS ORIGINAL SEIKO BAND. THE WATCH IS FULLY FUNCTIONAL AND WORKS AS IT SHOULD.

In the seller's description he also states: THE WATCH MAINTAINS ITS ORIGINAL SEIKO BAND.

I guess it depends how you define 'original'. As far as Seiko's database is concerned, the SAA040J was only offered with the G1157F bracelet - no rubber strap option. However, this rubber strap which is fitted may be 'original' to the watch's original owner. If you look at other examples of 7A38-6010's that have been retro-fitted with other neoprene or rubber dive straps, for example Hung Pham's, that I started off page one of this thread with: Not a perfect example, by any means, and fitted with a non-original Neoprene 'Dive' band ....

You'll see that the 'ears' of the G1157F bracelet end pieces had worn right through the black chrome plating on the underside of the lugs, leaving an impression where they once sat. Whereas on this watch there are hardly any such traces. Overall, it maintains the almost pristine flat matt black finish. But if you look closely at the top right hand lug in this photo:

.... You can see light tool marks - likely evidence of where the original G1157 bracelet was removed.

I guess all this watch really needs to turn it into a completely original 'minter' is one of these:

Just checking my eBay watching page, I see that tidy 7A38-6010 on a non-original rubber strap sold earlier this afternoon, against a Best Offer. Not exactly a surprise, with the increasing number of additional watchers the listing was picking up. :/

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201499558387

According to Goofbid's eBay Best Offer History tool, the offer accepted  by the seller was pretty close to ($199.95), if not $200.

Here's an average worn condition 7A38-6010, fitted with a makeshift NATO strap, listed yesterday evening by Italian eBay seller estherbfdez

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371551014250

Raro Seiko Chrono ref. 7A38-6010 anni '80 , correttamente funzionante in tutte le funzioni , cassa in acciaio trattata PVD , fondello a vite, vetro minerale, ghiera girevole bidirezionale .

Cinturino generico tipo nato

Dimensioni escluso corona : 37,00 mm

Prova di impermeabilità non testata.

Unlike the previous almost mint example, note that this one clearly shows wear marks (right through the black chrome plating) where the locating 'ears' of the G1157F bracelet's end pieces had once sat on the underside of the case lugs.

This NOS with tags 7A38-6010 was listed on eBay earlier this afternoon by a Spanish seller, with an asking price of 490 Euros.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182103433866

Seiko Sports 100 Black PVD 7A38-6010 NOS

Seiko black PVD case and bracelet in NOS condition. It comes with the original tags and stickers.

Stainless steel black PVD coated case 37mm without crown. Rotating bezel in black and gold.

Black dial color with 3 subdials. Needles and fluorescent indexes. Day-date at 3 hours.

Black coated PVD bracelet with signed logo in gold.

Japanese quartz movement with new battery on working perfect.

Probably just as well they'll be removing the battery before shipping - it's currently fitted with an under-sized SR927SW (#399).
