When I first saw this JDM 7A38-6040 listed by a US eBay seller, offered through the GSP program, yesterday evening, with the primary image showing it fitted with a rubber Dive strap, it briefly threw me for a moment. But in fact, this is just another case of  Déjà Vu - the case-back serial number 495033 being the dead giveaway. It is of course, the very same 7A38-6040 that was offered for sale on WatchUseek in October (for the vastly inflated price of $600) that previously sold on Yahoo Japan, at the beginning of September for 21,000 Yen (equivalent to a mere $203.43).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252624063242

That eBay listing by would-be US re-seller cubanchem ended yesterday evening - not surprisingly with the watch unsold.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252624063242

As the listing had two dozen watchers towards the end, I thought it might be worth checking Goofbid's Best Offer History tool

.... to see if there had been any offers made (which eBay annoyingly doesn't show you). Indeed there had - but only two:

A cheeky lowball offer of $200 and another for a not unreasonable $375. Both were summarily rejected.

The watch was back on eBay, re-listed a few seconds later, with the 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price reduced by $25 to $575.

And so it continues, with the seller's 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now asking price reducing slightly with each subsequent re-listing.

According to GoofBid's eBay Best Offer History tool, he's only received one other lowball offer (of around $200) in the last fortnight. That earlier rejected offer of $375 remains the highest to date. :(

This 7A38-6040 in average worn condition was listed on Yahoo Japan auctions earlier today. The opening bid price is 20,000 Yen - possibly a little over-optimistic in view of the condition. :/ That said, given the popularity of this model, I expect it will probably sell.

Google translates the Japanese seller's description, replete with all the usual caveats - and some duplication, as follows:

Well I was wrong about that bit: That said, given the popularity of this model, I expect it will probably sell.

It didn't - and has since been re-listed (retaining the same YJ item number) - at the same over-optimistic 20,000 Yen price.

Meanwhile, at the weekend, I'd noticed that YJ listing had been joined by another 7A38-6040, which looked vaguely familiar. :/

This example was fitted with a non-original bracelet and had an opening bid price of 10,000 Yen - half that of the other.

http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e205055970

Google translates the Japanese seller's description as follows:

Seiko Speedmaster 7A38-6040 chronograph USED.

- State: There are dirt, scratches accompanying use, and fine scratches are seen in the draft shield. Belt is not genuine, there are no accessories.

· Movement is currently battery stopped. Since we do not exchange the batteries, it is unclear whether the battery runs out or fails.

※ guarantee of action to give you in the status quo will not do. Please understand beforehand because it will not be able to respond to returned goods even if there is a malfunction in operation. I need your help by a no claim no return.

* Please contact me within 24 hours after bidding, please bid for those who can make payment within 3 days.

* Since payment will be made only to Japan Post Bank, please acknowledge it.

The auction ended about 15 minutes ago, having been automatically extended by 10 minutes, due to late bids placed.

It sold for a mere 15,800 Yen (equivalent to approx. $137 USD / £108.15 GBP) after only 5 bids.

And for the reason it looked vaguely familiar to me, you only need go back to the previous page of this thread ....

Looks like I'd forgotten to post the result for that last Yahoo Japan auction for a JDM 7A38-6040. So here it is, albeit a week late.

Sold for 24,600 Yen (equivalent to approx. $235.30 USD / £190 GBP) after 27 bids.

http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w155129256

It may be a different seller (possibly the winning bidder), but the 3 photos are the same as in that previous listing from October. ;)

This time around, that other 7A38-6040 on YJ did sell - for 20,500 Yen (equivalent to approx. $174 USD / £139 GBP) after 2 bids.

Meanwhile, on the other side of 'The Pond', the continued re-listing of that ex-YJ 7A38-6040 is getting painful to watch.

Funnily enough, here's another average worn condition 7A38-6040 which was listed on YJ auctions at lunchtime today.

http://page22.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/l373137007

Google translates the Japanese seller's description as follows:

Seiko Speedmaster 7A38 - 6040 day date.

It is a dish acquired from the collector.

This will be the "Speedmaster" made by Seiko in the 1980's.

Since the first 2 digits of the serial number starts from 49, it seems that it was manufactured in September 1984. (Individual interpretation).

It is a rare type with day and day of the week. (It is written in English and Japanese.)

Currently, time, chrono, date, day of the week normal operation we have.

The bezel rotates to both. Our speed masters also rotate to both so I think that is normal with this. (Individual interpretation.)

The band comes with a speed master logo (helmet) genuine belt.

Although it is scratches due to aging in the main body, the glass surface, the band, etc., I feel personally whether paint peeling of the inner circumference of the bezel which is common to the speed master is not bad so it goes into the category of good products overall. (It is an impression of the individual. Please make a decision on the picture.)

Currently moving smoothly, the timing of battery replacement is unknown. Battery exhaustion after goods arrival can not correspond.

There is a risk of sudden malfunction for old quartz watch. Please offer a bid after understanding with age clock.

Please judge all by photograph.

We are waiting for the bid of those who can acknowledge with no claim and no return.

To the end secondhand goods therefore nervous one. Bid. Please refrain.

It is shipped from Shiga outside fixed form (compensation, no tracking number), は こ boon 2 kg or less. (It will be shipped on weekdays) Please select after a successful bid.

In case of non-standard-size, we will make it uniform 400 yen. Regardless of excess or deficiency, I will make it 400 yen.

If you wish other shipping methods, we will correspond within the possible range. Please contact us before bidding.

New people, worse one of evaluation will judge here and delete it.

Since cancellation after bidding can not be done, please offer a bid after consideration.

Please be sure to bid on seeing the self-introduction column.

I need your help by a no claim and a no return.

(2016 December 17 day 21 hour 02 minute addition)

Ref of bracelet will be the YA29A.

The above Yahoo Japan auction for a 7A38-6040 ended a few moments ago, selling for 23,500 Yen (equivalent to approx $200 USD / £163 GBP) after 2 bids (presumably made by the same bidder - as that was the opening bid price).

US200, that is a good price for what looks to be a quality piece.

Paul, is it possible to have a step by step how to on how to navigate and make a purchase off of Yahoo Japan? Ergo the pitfalls, who we have to have as a proxy or surrogate bidder and how to pay. And then there's shipping and taxes. Credit card, bankdraft, PayPal?

I just hate to miss all of these great deals by not knowing the ins and outs of Japan Auctions. :D

Hello Paul in Vegas. You could try Buyee. They do offer payment storage and shipping and of course give you the possibility to bid on items from Yahoo Japan auctions. Strangely, not all the items. Best regards.

PS - And I think I am the buyer of this specific 7A38-6040...

That ex-Yahoo Japan 7A38-6040 offered by US eBay seller cubanchem continued to be re-listed. Although he stopped reducing the Buy-it-Now price when it reached $400, it was pretty clear that it wouldn't sell for that and that he might entertain a lower offer.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252687486949

It finally sold a couple of days ago after a 7th re-listing (the second time @ $399.99).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252696448273

I picked this up from a worldwide search on ended listings that I ran on eBay.com, which shows it sold against a Best Offer.

So it was a simple matter of interrogating Goofbid's eBay Best Offer History tool to find out what it actually eventually sold for ....

$325 - compared to the $600 he was originally asking and the USD equivalent of 21,000 Yen ($203.43) it sold for on Yahoo Japan.

This one owner 7A38-6040 was listed on Yahoo Japan auctions earlier today with an opening bid price of 30,000 Yen.

http://page21.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/j421365879

Google translates the Japanese seller's description as follows:

Seiko Seiko Watch Speedmaster Speedmaster 7A38-6040

Seiko Speedmaster 7A38-6040

Quartz chronograph with day date

YA29A: It is an original bracelet item.

Total length · inner circumference: about 18 cm (including dial plate)

Dial case: about 3.8 cm

There is no accessory.

I bought it in domestic sales goods around 1983 ~ 4.

I changed the battery about a year ago.

When the remaining battery power becomes low, the second hand will operate in 2 second increments.

There is a scratch on the reverse side.

Since it is second - hand goods, please pardon fine scratches, rubbing and dirt. The things in the picture are all. Those who are looking for new goods / finished goods should withhold a bid. Thank you for including bidding above. I need your help by a no claim no return. Shipping will be "postage cash on delivery: Yamato mail". Thank you.

The newer one and the worse one of evaluation may cancel a bid and a successful bid.

After the end of the auction, we will judge that there is no intention of purchase when we can not receive payment within 5 days of message · within 5 days we will delete with circumstances of the highest bidder.

Thank you.

A slightly belated result. The above Yahoo Japan auction for a 7A38-6040 ended yesterday, selling for ¥47,100 Yen (equivalent to approx $420.50 USD / £335.50 GBP) after 21 bids. Looking at the high feedback number of the winning bidder ID, I'd supect it was purchased by an international buyer using one of the proxy bidding services.

This average condition stainless JDM 7A38-7040 'head only', bereft of its original SPEEDMASTER  logo'd bracelet, but supplied with a loose NATO strap, was listed earlier today on Yahoo Japan auctions, with an opening bid price of 1000 Yen.

http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/s526004206

Google translates the Japanese seller's description as follows:

Seiko Speedmaster 7A38-6040 Battery replacement completed Good New article with NATO belt (ZULUDIVER) inspection: It is an exhibition of 7A28.

Battery and packing have been replaced. Including the operation of Chrono, it is functioning normally. Also, there is no problem with the calendar function. Because individual batteries were exchanged, please consider waterproofness as the level of daily life.

Because there was no belt, I bought a NATO belt for exhibition.

Although there are small scratches on the whole, there are no big scratches on the outside. There are several shallow scratches on the glass surface, but there are no big scratches. Because we felt a little small, it is a deliberate exhibit to us.

I ask by a no objection per individual exhibition.
