This stainless 7A38-7000 was listed on eBay yesterday evening by an Austrian seller. It appears to be in pretty decent condition apart from some loss / corrosion of the matt black painted bracelet link inlays, which can easily be remedied with a small paintbrush.

Well, I will admit to having a bit of a play with that one, with absolutely no intention of winning the auction - and I didn't. With 5 minutes of the auction remaining, after 20 bids, I was ahead with the bidding still at a mere 76 Euros, but I was conscious that the listing had nearly 70 watchers and had already received over 600 views. So I'm just sat there, refreshing the screen, waiting for the inevitable snipefest. In the final minute, bidding climbed from from 100 Euros to a very respectable 271 Euros after 29 bids.

This stainless 7A38-7000, fitted with a hitherto unidentified* non-original replacement bracelet, was listed a couple of days ago by a 'newbie' UK seller; one who clearly doesn't know a great deal about watches (see amendment to the description). Not sure what the bracelet is, it might be a 20mm 'Feiko' aftermarket bracelet, but it's fitted with the correct style 7 adjustment hole SQ logo'd clasp.

Vintage SEIKO 3N0070 CHRONOGRAPH WATCH

IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION.

THERE ARE SOME SIGNS OF USAGE AS EXPECTED.

On 11-Nov-16 at 20:34:52 GMT, seller added the following information:

NOTE: I just observed a mistake. This watch is not automatic. It uses a battery.

_______________________________________________________________

On 12-Nov-16 at 15:26:28 GMT, seller added the following information:

The numbers and letters stamped on the back of the bracelet's fixing tubes are: Z1006.E

*Belated edit: I asked the seller a question. They replied simply Z1006.E, but later added a longer reply as another amendment to the description. Which makes it a Seiko p/n Z1006S, normally found on models 8123-5030 / -5039 and 8123-6000 / -6009. That watch has a 20mm lug width fitting, but it's obviously a slightly narrower case.

The above eBay auction for a stainless 7A38-7000 fitted with a non-original Seiko replacement bracelet, ended yesterday evening, selling for a few pence short of £100 Quid after 28 bids.

Another stainless 7A38-7000 fitted with a non-original replacement bracelet was listed by an Italian eBay seller last weekend.

There was only the one photo - a composite image.

Earlier the same day, another stainless 7A38-7000, this time fitted with the correct original p/n B1170S bracelet, was listed by another Italian eBay seller - one we've encountered before, who's not exactly unknown for pulling shenanigans - estherbfdez.

Strangely, this one appeared to be reasonably priced (especially by normal Italian 'pie-in-the-sky' pricing standards) ....

But then the seller pulled the listing after a couple of days (item no longer available), so deduce from that what you will. :/

Not too difficult to figure out what became of the above stainless 7A38-7000 - it was obviously sold via a 'back door' deal. Here's the same watch, case-back serial # 421038 now offered by profiteering Italian eBay re-seller cmax-28762 for double the price !

Just checking my eBay watching page, I noticed that the above listing for a 7A38-7000 had ended a couple of days ago.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132042672716

As has become the norm, eBay deceptively shows it has having sold for the full 500 Euros asking price. But I had my doubts, so I checked it using Goofbid's eBay Best Offer History tool, which shows it actually sold against a Best Offer of 400 Euros.

Another handsome profit for loathesome Italian eBay re-seller cmax-28762 - for zero effort other than adding a presentation box.

This non-working stainless 7A38-7000 in poor condition, listed by a UK eBay seller yesterday evening, is one probably best avoided, for a number of reasons - other than as a potential source of spare parts. The discoloured dial and hands lume points to it having suffered from either a serious battery leak or moisture ingress and the badly distorted Tachymeter ring is a sure sign that someone has applied heat to the watch, in an effort to free up 'old sticky oil' and get it running again. (See the 3 W's thread).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162341884723

A Seiko 7A38-7000 case and bracelet.

The case is good but the movement requires replacement and the dial ring is damaged.

These parts are being sold by Chealwatch as we are soon due to retire and will be selling all of our stock and tools over the next couple of years.

We are also selling none running watches marked as 'spares or repairs 'for watch repairers and others to use for parts or to renovate back to good use.

We would not expect used watches or parts to be returned unless our description has been greatly misleading in which case we will always offer a full refund.

if they are returned but not for minor defect that we may have overlooked.

All watches are sold with NO water resistant warranty.

The tools and equipment we have for sale is all working but will not be in new condition and we would not expect them to be returned.

Items over £30.00 may be sent by Recoded Delivery or by Royal Mail Special Delivery next day if high value.

There will no additional charge added the stated postage charge for that item.

If you are not able to sign for an item then please advise and we will send by normal parcel post.

We do not wish to post item outside the UK. This is our choice at this time so please do not bid if you are in another country.

We may change this policy in the future but until we do please do not ask for overseas ( outside UK ) carriage.

We do not use ' buy it now ' as we prefer to give buyers an opportunity to bid on the item that we will list at a low initial price.

Watches sold as 'running well' will have been serviced and checked by Chealwatch and if customer not satisfied we will refund on returned goods.

We also have watches that have been serviced and are in good running order for sale at Chealwatch.

Another reason to avoid might be the seller's reputation. Although they have 100% feedback on eBay, the seller 'Chealwatch' is Chris Heal (a FBHI accredited watchmaker) who has received a LOT of adverse negative publicity about the quality of his workmanship in a long-running thread on TZ-UK: http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?228547 Chealwatch - "The Butcher of Rye"

Well, that didn't last very long ! :o Sold as a Buy-it-Now 45 minutes after my last post.

Certainly worth £20 Quid of anyone's money for the case and bracelet, let alone what else might be salvageable.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162341884723

It also shows that the seller's statement:

We do not use ' buy it now ' as we prefer to give buyers an opportunity to bid on the item that we will list at a low initial price.

.... is a complete and utter load of tosh.

That irksome profiteering Italian eBay seller cmax-28762 seems to have cornered the market in stainless 7A38-7000's lately.

Here's another average used example he listed yesterday, with his typical 'pie-in-the-sky' 400 Euros Buy-it-Now asking price.

This 'head only' stainless 7A38-7000 was listed earlier this afternoon by a US eBay seller. I've only bothered uploading 3 of the seller's 5 photos, because a couple were very similar. Apart from the lack of bracelet, note the discoloured lume batons and the mangled bosses of the 1/10s and constant seconds sub-dial hands - the latter being a pretty good indication that it's been buggered about with, by some ham-fisted amateur.

Update: I had to have a little chuckle to myself.

Not long after I made my previous post, the eBay seller revised the listing, reducing the opening bid price from $99 tp $49.

It would appear that there was absolutely no need for the eBay seller to reduce the opening bid price. That auction for the 'head only' stainless 7A38-7000 ended about 5 minutes ago, selling for a whopping $197.50 (approx. £157.91) after 19 bids ! :o

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192090774662

That it made such a surprisingly high figure is mostly due to the efforts of the losing bidder r***r, who, checking the bidding history, had bid it from $99 upwards to $195. This person has 100% bidding activity with this seller / item, indicating a possible shill.

Checking my eBay watching page, I just noticed that most recent listing for a used stainless 7A38-7000 by profiteering Italian eBay seller cmax-28762 ended earlier this morning. I can't find any evidence of a Best Offer, so presumably it must have sold for the full 400 Euros Buy-it-Now price.

This stainless 7A38-7000 fitted with a non-original replacement Seiko bracelet, was listed earlier this evening with a suspiciously over-optimistic Buy-it-Now price of $400 by a Croatian / Macedonian eBay seller. I must admit, I didn't initially check the seller's photos particularly closely and it wasn't until I uploaded them that I noticed, in the last one, the bracelet was stamped C126 (instead of B1170). The first three 'head-on' shots of the watch taken inside the box, conveniently help to obscure this fact and may be a deliberate attempt to deceive. The description is typically vague. FWIW - The box itself is missing the inlay from the lower clamshell.

As the Croat eBay seller seems reluctant to show us the topside of the C126S bracelet in his photos, out of curiosity, I had a look for myself. A reverse look-up ('where used') on Seiko Oceania's database reveals it properly belongs on a Seiko H357-505B ana-digi. Here's a few photos of a rather nice example which was offered for sale on WatchuSeek in January 2013.

Clearly, the C126's narrow oblong slots showing the black interconnecting links look nothing like the equivalent trapezoidal B1170S.

Speaking of incorrect replacement bracelets fitted to stainless 7A38-7000's, as I was ....

Scrolling through the photos on this page of the thread, I noticed something I'd failed to spot earlier - another more subtle example.

The most recent stainless 7A38-7000 sold by Italian eBay seller cmax-29762 at the weekend, was fitted with a Seiko p/n B1074S bracelet, which is normally found on the 7A28-703B and 7A28-7039 ! :o

These two bracelets look very similar from the topside and I'd often wondered if the p/n B1074S would fit the 7A38-7000.

It clearly does - and doesn't look too out of place. The only immediately noticeable difference being their end fixing plates:

That stainless 7A38-7000 fitted with an incorrect replacement Seiko bracelet, offered by the Croatian eBay seller, sold yesterday evening - less than 24 hours after it was listed. I'm not entirely surprised. These things are flying off the shelves lately, like hot cakes - regardless of asking price and condition. However, it didn't sell for the full $400 Buy-it-Now asking price ....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292020455601

.... but against a best offer:

According to Goofbid's eBay Best Offer History tool, the offer accepted by the seller was for $280.33 (probably a 'round' $280).

This post (reply #99 in this thread) is by means of a 'page filler', as we're about to turn over to a new page. Fingers crossed. ;)

Forum member Gufi (Achim) posted this 'stock' photo of his stainless 7A38-7000 in a WRUW thread on SCWF yesterday.
