Why do so many used examples of 7A38-705A seem to have led such hard lives - been neglected and mal-treated ? My most commonly used adjectives in this thread have been: 'typically tired, well worn and faded with a badly stretched bracelet'. :(

Well this 'parts watch' listed overnight by an Indian eBay seller is in another league again - right at the bottom of the table.

Indeed, it probably more rightfully belongs in James's Bottom of the 7Axx barrel thread

The above eBay listing for a battered 7A38-705A parts watch ended yesterday lunchtime.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252916578858

Sold not for the reduced Buy-it-now price of $84.99, but as revealed by WatchCount.com, against a best offer of $55.

As confirmed by the eBay Purchase History. There was only one other declined offer of $25.

This typically tired-looking 7A38-705A was listed in the early hours of this morning by a Filipino eBay seller, with a risibly over-optimistic 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of  $850 !!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222463811541

I hadn't forgotten about this laughably over-priced 7A38-705A offered last month by the Filipino eBay seller time_wise, which I'd posted about, in full, at the bottom of the previous page. I was waiting to see if it would be re-listed. ;)

The 30-day listing ended a couple of weeks ago, on May 5th with it unsold.

According to the eBay Offer History, there weren't even any 'lowball' offers made.

That doesn't mean that the seller hasn't received any since the listing ended, which may be the reason it hasn't been re-listed. :/

Speaking of 'typically tired, well worn and faded with a badly stretched bracelet', here's another such example of the 7A38-705A that I missed spotting last month. It was listed by an Italian eBay seller in the middle of April, with an opening bid price of 79.90 Euros. The reason I didn't pick it up at the time (apart from there being no mention of Seiko 7A38, let alone the complete model number in the title or description), was the seller's omission of the 's' from Sports 100 and mis-spelling of chronograph.

http://www.ebay.it/itm/rarissimo-seiko-sport-100-speedmaster-quarz-cronograph-/182531363190

The description simply read: Rarissimo Seiko sport 100 cronografo anni 70.

There were more details in the Seller's Notes:

“ rarissimo orologio seiko sport 100 cronografo anni 70 rarissima versione con ghiera in backelite orologio in ottime condizioni come si evince dalle foto con normali segni del tempo dovuti all' utilizzo perfettamente funzionante bracciale originale raro raro raro.

It theoretically sold on 22nd April for 126 Euros after 27 bids:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182531363190

But a quick check of the Bidding History shows that 23 of those 27 bids were placed by the 'winning' bidder - the majority in the closing minutes of the auction. He seemed either very determined to win the auction - or at least to push up the selling price.

No great surpise, with so many Italian eBay auctions being shilled, this (7) feedback bidder has 100% activity with the seller.

That is a real joke !!

Incidentally, if you ever wondered how shill bidder ID's manage to accumulate feedback, sometimes sellers are crafty enough.

But what follows next is an even bigger joke - so funny you really couldn't make it up. The apparent stupidity beggars belief !

Without wasting too much time, the Italian eBay seller luigpagan-6 set about re-listing it. Except, instead of using eBay's relisting feature, he created a completely new listing. The 6 photos were new, too - now showing the correct Day / Date. But still with the same mis-aligned Tachymeter ring. He also managed to spell cronografo correctly (in Italian) this time, in both title and description.

http://www.ebay.it/itm/rarissimo-seiko-sport-100-cronografo-/182542055692

This time, the very brief description read simply: Raro raro seiko sport 100 cronografo.

Again, there was more detail in the Seller's Notes (but less wording than the previous listing):

“ rarissimo orologio seiko sport 100 quarzo rara versione con lunetta in backelite orologio in buone condizioni con normali segni dovuti all utilizzo .funzionante.

The auction ended on 30th April, theoretically selling, this time around, for 125 Euros after 30 bids.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182542055692

Wait for it .... Wait for it ....

Naturally, I checked the Bidding History to see if there was any further evidence of shill bidding by the mystery (7) bidder.

Of course there was. This time he placed 20 of the 30 bids. But the shill was out-shilled by a Zero feedback bidder !!!

This other 'winning' Zero feedback bidder placed 8 out of the 30 bids and amusingly also has 100% bidding activity with the seller.

Now whether this was the Italian eBay seller using 2 shill ID's, bidding against each other to jack the price up, I can't tell. Surely no-one could be that stupid ? :/ The alternative could be that somebody (possibly a losing bidder in the previous auction) decided to play him at his own game. Then again, there's always the outside chance that it might have been a genuinely innocent first time buyer. But if it was, it begs the question why the seller hasn't left him feedback by now. I haven't yet found another instance of this 7A38-705A being re-listed again, but if you see it before me, remember ....

Caveat Emptor !!

I guess I should have been a little more patient - it's only just over a month since the previous listing (asking an absolutely ludicrous $850 as a Buy-it-Now) ended. :/ Filipino eBay seller time_wise finally decided to relist his tired example of a 7A38-705A. This time he's set it up as an auction, with an opening bid price of $549. Assuming common sense prevails, the outcome is fairly predictable.

Needless to say, that last ploy by Filipino eBay seller time_wise also failed to attract any bids and it went unsold.

He next re-listed it (again) as a Buy-it-Now for $650 on 16th June 2017. That listing is set to automatically re-list.

Yesterday evening, that 7A38-705A was joined by another (to use my favourite quote) 'typically tired, well worn and faded example with a badly stretched bracelet'. It was listed by an Austrian eBay seller as a 5-day auction with an opening bid price of only 1 Euro.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253187676068

Sie bieten hier auf eine vintage SEIKO SPORTS 100 Chronograph Quarz Herren Armbanduhr.

• Ref. 7A38 - 705A.

• Durchmesser ohne Krone : ca. 41,5 mm.

• Edelstahl Gehäuse mit geschraubtem Edelstahl Boden.

• Umfang Uhr + Armband: ca. 165 mm.

• Originales Seiko Edelstahlband und Schließe, ( in einen schlechten Zustand ).

• Tagesanzeige, Englisch und Arabisch.

• Chronograph.

Indeed, translating the seller's German description, the phrases describing its condition are refreshingly honest:

• Original Seiko stainless steel strap and buckle, (in poor condition). • The clock is in a bad condition but works.

The Austrian seller's username barann14 was familiar, but I also had that nagging sense of Déjà Vu about the watch.

It didn't take long to find a serial number match (# 441137)  - the saga begins at the top of page 3 of this thread.

After various re-listings and shenanigans by the French seller , it finally sold on 21st January 2016 for a Best Offer of 180 Euros.

Hi. The Filipino one is back with a greatly reduced price from $850 to $495.

I wasn't aware that it had actually done us a favour and 'gone away', Mithra. :/

It's been there (at least that particular re-listing - item # 352092029420 has) for nearly 7 months - since the middle of June last year.

See my post higher up this page dated 4th October 2017. ;)

However, I concede that I had failed to notice that the would-be seller had reduced the Buy-it-Now price from $650 to $495. If you check the revision history, you'll see he'd made that reduction as far back as November 23rd last year. That said, had I spotted it, I'm not sure I'd have bothered to pass comment, because $495 is still way too much to ask for an example in this comparatively poor condition. It also probably explains why the 3 dozen watchers are still sat on their hands, waiting for the next reduction.

This 7A38-705A was listed on Yahoo Japan earlier this afternoon, as a 7-day auction listing, with an opening bid price of 39,800 Yen. The watch head doesn't look too bad, in terms of fading of the bezel inlay, dial and Tachymeter printing (compared to some other previous examples), but the bracelet fitted is obviously a non-original replacement (as hinted by the seller's description). Not only that, but even when fitted with a clasp extender, it's also woefully short. :(

http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b303778404

Google translates the Japanese seller's description as follows:

Seiko chronograph overseas model "7A38-705A" made in the 1980s.

Although it is an original accessory, the bracelet may not be original.

Also, some spacers are included because it is short. Please check with the image.

Size: about 41 mm

My wrist is exactly 16 cm, so I think that the wrist circumference is about 16 cm.

Battery replaced in the watch shop on 4/1, it is working without problems.

It is a used article of individual storage to the last.

After it makes a successful bid, I hope in a no claim, a no return.

The above 7A38-705A fitted with a short incorrect replacement bracelet has remained unsold on Yahoo Japan, being almost continuously re-listed since the beginning of April. It seems the Japanese seller thought he might have more success using a different platfiorm. Earlier in the week it appeared on eBay - with a highly optimistic Buy-it-Now price of $419 (incidentally eqivalent to 45,900 Yen - 11,000 Yen higher than YJ.). The 3 photos used are the same as the YJ listing.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292596002200

Very good condition.

Watch is used but with very few signs due to age.

Size is aprox 41mm.

Belt is a bit small. Fit a 16mm wrist and I am not sure it if it's original belt.

Ships worldwide for usd 25.

Ships from Japan custom duties might be required.

Thanks for watching.

This 7A38-705A in better than average condition was listed this morning by an Italian eBay seller. Despite this model's comparative scarcity - and desirability, IMHO the seller is pushing his luck asking in 575 Euros as a Buy-it-Now. Pity the case-back has been sanded. The clasp also appears to have been refinished.

The above Italian eBay listing for a 7A38-705A in very good cosmetic condition ended earlier this evening - almost exactly an hour ago. As expected, it sold for somewhat less than the seller's 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of 575 Euros.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273310151622

WatchCount.com's Look-up tool reveals it sold for a best offer of 440 Euros.

It goes without saying that the Japanese seller's eBay listing for his 7A38-705A, fitted with a short non-original bracelet, went unsold. He hasn't bothered to re-list it since. Meanwhile, he'd continued to re-list it ad nauseam on Yahoo Japan at the same over-optimistic 39,800 Yen opening bid price. It had almost got to the point where I was ignoring it. I just ran a search on Yahoo Japan and noticed that for his latest 7-day re-listing (which still retains the same YJ item number) at the beginning of this week, he's changed the opening bid price to 1 Yen. But there's a reserve price set - and so it's probably safe to predict the outcome.

http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b312586405

FWIW, he's also added two more photos - of rather dubious quality.

I didn't see the above Yahoo Japan auction listing ending yesterday afternoon and the ended result displayed (showing a price of 29,800 Yen and 20 bids placed) is probably a little misleading. It's pretty obvious it didn't reach the seller's reserve price, because it's back on YJ once again - relisted for another 7 days.

Transpires I definitely wasn't watching that one closely enough.  The Japanese seller re-listed it once again on 16th July (still retaining the same YJ item number), but this time as a 6-day auction with an opening bid price of 1 Yen and no reserve. That auction ended a week ago, on 22nd July, with the 7A38-705A selling for ¥25,000 Yen after 6 bids. That's equivalent to $224 USD / £171 GBP.

This 7A38-705A, missing half its bracelet and 'in need of some help', was listed late yesterday evening by a US eBay seller, with an attractively low Buy-it-Now price of $125. I must admit, I did give it some thought - as the basis for a project I've been contemplating. But then I read the description and noticed the parochially minded seller wouldn't ship outside USA.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223079325181

Very rare Seiko. Installed new battery keeps great time, date functions work, but buttons do not work to operate chrono functions. Been sitting a long time and buttons will need attention. Only one side of bracelet is with watch as I found it. Every thing looks original. Well worth restoring, Sold as is. PayPal only. Free shipping. I do not ship out of US.

I didn't actually read my eBay saved search notification emails till this morning. But I was up early and saw it in good time - and thought about it plenty enough. I took the screen print of the listing at 8:30am. Thought to myself 'Meh' and went for some breakfast. By the time I came back @ 9:15am, it was sold. :/

This time as a 7-day auction, with an opening bid price of 25,000 Yen - which is where we left off last time, (when it supposedly sold for that figure on 22nd July). Needless to say I'm not going to bother re-posting the details.
