Checking my eBay watching page, I see the above 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 sold yesterday evening, not for the £795 opening bid price, as confusingly shown by the ended item summary below, but against an undisclosed best offer. Your guess is as good as mine. :/

I bought the 1986 black strap model that ended last night. Condition wasn't quite what I was hoping for in one area (case scratches below glass) but it's a got a genuine one-owner history that I found appealing. Didn't pay a lot less than the asking price to be honest, given that he wasn't trying it on at £1k like other sellers. Am really looking forward to receiving it - my first 7a28! :)

Thanks for letting us know, Dorian. I'd much rather see eBay listings ended against an undisclosed best offer than the multitude which get ended as 'item no longer available' (presumably sold off eBay via the 'back door'). I see from your profile and Intro' post you're interested in Military and Space watches. Perhaps you might want to consider a Yema Spationaute III Aragatz next. (They're powered by Seiko 7A38).

PS - I don't think the NATO strap on your 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 is actually 'black'. More like a grubby dark olive drab.

Thank you for the recommendation! I have never even heard of the Yema so that's something to look into - but after last night it will have to wait a while! My collection so far is just a Speedmaster Pro, Bulova Moonwatch in black and a Seiko 6139 Pogue.

Originally I was looking at a Hamilton Khaki Field watch which is very nice, but decided that because I tend to identify more with space and aviation than the field, I'd have a look for something more of a pilots watch. Plus I like vintage over new. So it quickly escalated to the Seiko Gen 1!

I took a closer look at the strap - you're right it's not black. It looks to be a dark grey, but either way I think I'll get a new one just in case. The watch itself looks like it could do with a good clean as well.

What was it I wrote earlier about so many eBay listings being 'back doored' (often by unscrupulous would-be profiteering re-sellers) ? Late this afternoon, the UK eBay seller ended that latest listing for a 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1, early - after less than 24 hours, in the usual fashion: as item no longer available, automatically cancelling all bids in the process. Checking the bidding history, the high bid at the time was £550. I sometimes wonder why I bother.

Call me a pedant (Spelling Nazi even), but this is getting bloody ridiculous !! :o

Yesterday evening another UK eBay seller who can't spell SEIKO listed another 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1, with a Buy-it-Now price of £860 and currently no option to make an offer. He evidently prefers the other 'alternate' spelling SIEKO.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352873360062

In the early hours of this morning, that other UK eBay seller who can't spell SEIKO, ended his listing for a 7A28 RAF Gen. 1 as allegedly being no longer available. Possibly sold off eBay via the 'back door' - or perhaps he intends to re-list it in the New Year, with SEIKO spelled properly.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352873360062

As I suspected he might, yesterday evening, that UK eBay seller eventually re-listed his 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1. He's dropped his Buy-it-Now price by a Tenner, to £850, but still hasn't corrected his mis-spelling of SEIKO (as SIEKO).

Another 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 was listed by another UK eBay seller yesterday evening, with a 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £1250, or the option to make a much lower, more sensible offer.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293345083297

I can't say I'd noticed before, but over the last couple of weeks, the UK eBay seller had revised his listing, twice reducing his 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price down to a marginally less over-optimistic £1035.

Checking my eBay watching page, I noticed that he ended the listing late yesterday afternoon, as item allegedly no longer available. Perhaps he succumbed to a lower (rather than lowball) 'back door' offer off eBay. Who knows. :/

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293345083297

Well evidently he didn't succumb to any 'back door' offer, because it's back on eBay, re-listed this afternoon; this time as a 7-day auction, with an over-optimistic opening bid price of £995 (with the option to make an offer).

Yesterday evening, UK eBay seller alwaystherighttime listed another non-working 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 Head Only, in not exactly what I'd personally describe as 'Excellent Condition', as a 3-day auction, with an opening bid price of £400.

This non-working 7A28-7120, fitted with a leather strap, which appeared from the two photos, to be in better cosmetic condition than most, was listed albeit briefly yesterday lunchtime, by a UK eBay seller. It was supposed to be a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of £100.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274215875461

Watch sold as seen, not working. Good as spare parts. Screen slightly scratched. Internally the watch workings are intact and dry. Watch body in good condition. All pushers working. Leather watch strap fitted. UK postage only.

Unfortunately somebody couldn't wait the 7 days and persuaded the seller to end the listing as 'sold' after only 5 hours (and 5 bids), by which point the bidding had only reached £134. So it was effectively 'back doored'. I hope for the seller's sake that he got rather more than £134 for it. :/

This not at all rare (by any stretch of the imagination) 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 was listed yesterday evening, by another UK eBay seller, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of £750.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153803545504

HERE'S A SUPERB SEIKO, MILITARY ISSUED GEN.1 QUARTZ CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH. THESE WATCHES WERE ISSUED TO PILOTS/HELICOPTER PILOTS FROM 1983.

THIS WATCH IS ONE OF THE LAST GEN.1 WRISTWATCHES, IN MY OPINION IS A MUCH BETTER BALANCED DESIGN, THAN THE GEN.2

THIS TRIPLE REGISTER CHRONOGRAPH WATCH, POWERED BY A SEIKO 7A28 - 7120 QUALITY MOVEMENT, HAVING THREE PUSHERS AND A CROWN AROUND THE 38MM CASE.

THE WATCH IS KEEPING EXCELLENT TIME (NEW BATTERY FITTED) ALL SUB DIALS ARE WORKING AND ZERO.

CASEBACK ENGRAVED WITH ALL RELEVANT MILITARY INFORMATION. 6645 - 99 / 7683056 MILITARY BROAD ARROW MARK. 9852 / 90.

ONLY 11500 OF THESE WATCHES WERE ISSUED AND ARE GOING UP IN VALUE ALL THE TIME. THE CASE IS UNPOLISHED AND HAS ORIGINAL NATO STRAP.

PLEASE LOOK AT ALL PICTURES, AS THESE FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION.

IT'S NOT OFTEN YOU SEE A WATCH LIKE THIS IN SUCH GREAT ORIGINAL CONDITION AS THIS ONE.

Yet another 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 was listed by another UK eBay seller, yesterday afternoon, with a lower than average Buy-it-Now asking price of £650 and the option to make an offer.

Seiko Gen1 Military Issued Pilot Watch .

Been in storage for many years and condition is good Used.

New battery.

Could do with a Service as the second hand is not moving and stuck just before the 12 position as per pic.

It's keeping really good time and everything else works as it should.

It really is a Stunning watch and deserves to be worn not locked away...

Any questions please ask.

I didn't think it would hang around very long and indeed it didn't, selling yesterday evening, less than 6 hours later. However, it didn't sell for the £650 Buy-it-Now price, as one might have expected.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254490559518

But as revealed by the alternative 'true selling price' link for a best offer of £575.

It's academic now, but the UK eBay seller did revise his listing later that day, adding the option to make an offer. I say 'academic', because checking my eBay watching page, the 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 Head Only appears to have sold late last night, for the full £875 Buy-it-Now price.
