At first glance, the dark-coloured coated version of the 7A38-6020 is similar to the stainless version in many respects: the chunky style of case and bezel; the bracelet - even the dial layout and those unique 'tuning fork' sub-dial hands. In reality, other than movements they share very few identical components. I wrote 'dark-coloured' for a good reason. When I saw the first photos of examples on eBay and the old Network54 SCWF back in 2009, I incorrectly assumed these watches were actually 'black'. On Seiko Oceania's database, the SAA043J's case material (finish) is shown as BCRP - which I believe means 'Black Chrome Plated'. So when I started right-clicking and saving photos I captioned them as such. Perhaps you can see why, from these photos used in an eBay listing in April 2009.
On this example, there was obviously a fair amount of wear to the coating - exposing the base metal in places, particularly on the sides of the bezel. Note: in the penultimate photo, the bracelet had been fitted with two non-original flat section stainless adjustment links. The next photo I saw of one online, posted in his collection update thread by Martin 'Martback' on the old Network54 SCWF in May 2009, only served to further add to my earlier confusion. He posted it elsewhere (in a separate blog thread) captioned as follows: A watch from the junkpile, this Sports 100 7A38-6020. I got it for the very cool subdial hands and the PVD case.
Apart from the non-original leather strap and sweep second hand that had been fitted, note the bezel lettering (originally orange) has faded badly to almost white. Martin bought the watch in that condition. Here's the original photos from the eBay listing in June 2008:
The second photo of the underside shows almost perfectly the colour of the watch's original outer coating - deep chocolate brown. These next two photos, posted by 'M4TT' on WatchuSeek in mid 2009 show the original colour coating pretty well. Not only that, but they give a truer impression of the dial colour, which is actually a very dark metallic brown, rather than black.
His second photo, also taken in July 2009 and posted on WatchuSeek, but re-posted a couple of years later on TZ-UK : was captioned: Hmmmm 7A38 and Wabi, I think I have just the photo...
The bracelet links in the lower part of the photo show the stages of wear beautifully - from the dark brown outer coating, through to the black chrome underneath, down to the base metal. Note that the bezel printing on his example has faded from orange to yellow - and although the hands and minute marks are still orange, most of what was originally orange printing on the dial has also faded to yellow. | |

Features: Rare Seiko sports 100 watchmade approx. 1980 years. The watch has 7A38 well known seiko movement with 15 jewels Watch is working perfectly as should. About the state there is a signs of a litlle more use. The glass have in the middle some scratches; the rotating bezel is working. On the case and bracelet have also signs of use. The housing has PVD coated Diameter of the watch is approx. 43mm. The watch has interesting military looking. It was probably due to my frustration about having the previous example 'snaffled' by a back-door buyer, which prompted me to do the same and make the seller an offer to end the listing early. That was despite his description stating it had 'signs of use' and a scratched crystal. The dark photos should have served as a warning - that they hid rather more wear than they showed. It certainly wasn't pretty.
It cleaned up well, but was clearly in a well-wabi'd state and the bezel lettering had suffered the usual fading from orange to yellow. A month later, in November 2011, I started a thread on RLT http://www.thewatchforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=70348 entitled: The Biggest, Baddest (And Brownest?) 7A38 Of Them All …The allegedly 'black chrome' plated 7A38-6020 Although eminently wearable as a 'beater' (before making my offer, I'd made sure it had sufficient bracelet adjustment links to fit me), my plans at the time had been to restore it - by re-spraying the original coating, using an airbrush. I successfully managed to achieve the correct shade of 'mucky' dark chocolate brown, by mixing Humbrol Pullman Umber Brown (RC415) with Matt Black enamel paint. In the meantime, Manuel who regularly posts as '6309 7040' on the Italian Orologio & Passioni watch forum, had been negotiating the purchase of a NOS 7A38-6020 which had been languishing in a shop window for many years. He finally succeeded in December 2011.
Manuel's first photo was posted on page 8 of the 'Censimento 7Axx' thread on O&P: http://orologi.forumfree.it/?t=57560918&st=105 He captioned it: A me piace. Raro 7A38, in stile military. The second is on page 9: http://orologi.forumfree.it/?t=57560918&st=120 I'll try to refrain from commenting on Manuel's choice of photo props - but this watch has absolutely no military connection. Although the coating of his watch is pristine and unworn, its bezel and dial printing suffered from fading due to exposure to sunlight. Before I forget, here are two other coated 7A38-6020's, both owned by US collectors, photographed in their collection display cases. The first was posted by 'Gordon H' on the old Network54 SCWF, back in April 2009 (see top right, slightly out of focus):

The photo was captioned: A strange diver with a worn chocolate-brown finish, maybe a Giugiaro diver – $120 This NOS with tags example was listed by an Italian eBay seller with a Buy-it-Now price of $700. Apart from their obvious visual similarities to their 7A38-6020 'big brother', the other reason I thought it might be worth mentioning the 8123-6280 is its bracelet - p/n Z1208H. The bracelet p/n for the coated 7A38-6020 is Z1207H. Their pin and tube fitting appear to be the same, so it may be possible to fit the Z1208H bracelet to a 7A38-6020, although the width at the shoulder may be slightly smaller. Here is a very rare genuine vintage Seiko 7a38 6020 stainless steel PVD coated bracelet complete with Seiko clasp. It is coffee brown in colour. It is used and does have marks and wear from sitting in draw for the past 15 years so please don't expect brand new. The stamped ref# is Z1208. Extremely rare. The seller subsequently amended his listing description to read: Here is a very rare genuine vintage stainless steel PVD coated bracelet complete with Seiko clasp. Apparently it is for a Seiko 8123 6280 - from Google it looked like one for a Seiko 7a38 6020 (looks darn like it ).... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Getting back to the original subject .... A nice-looking example with minimal rubbing wear to the vulnerable brown coating was listed on eBay (again in Italy) in February 2012:

Specification and Buyers Guide - 7A38-6020 SAA043J
Size: 43mm diameter (excluding crown and pushers) x 43mm over lug ends x 13mm deep. Case material: Stainless Steel - Matt dark chocolate brown finish over black chrome plating (Seiko's database just shows BCRP). Bi-directional 60-click bezel, with 8 distinctive finger cut-outs, in the same matt dark chocolate brown finish. Black moulded acrylic resin bezel insert - with conventional 'Diver' minute scale. Lume pip ▽ | 10 | 20 | 30 | 40 | 50 | in bright Orange.
Dial: Part number is 7A38602LXB29. Seiko's database shows the colour as 'Black', but it's actually a dark metallic brown with Orange (SPORTS 100 and chrono' sub-dials) and Gold printing. A dark brown dial ring with orange minute marks carries the lume pips. Dial markings: SEIKO (printed) QUARTZ Chronograph SPORTS 100; at bottom JAPAN 7A38 602L T Suwa symbol. There is a white lume inverted triangle painted at '12' on the dial, plus 13, 14, 16-20, 22, 23 printed in gold at the hour marks. Day and Date wheels: White lettering on black background. Second languages seen: Spanish and Arabic. Hands: Hour and Minute hands are Gold (with lume). Sweep second hand and upper 'Tuning Fork' sub-dial hands are orange. Seiko crystal p/n: 310W68GN00 - 31.0mm Ø x 2.90mm thick, domed with polished bevel edge - NLA; no substitutes identified as yet. Case-back markings: Double Wave Caseback; 7A38-6020 [A0] SEIKO; BASE METAL ST. STEEL; WATER RESISTANT; JAPAN S.
Bracelet is Seiko p/n Z1207H. Underside of first joining links are stamped Z1207. Bracelet is all over dark chocolate brown finish. The bracelet tapers from 23.5mm to 18mm at the clasp. Adjustment links are retained by / pivot on 1.0mm diameter push pins. Bracelet fixing is by Pin and Tube, Seiko part numbers 81601169 and 81180109. Clasp has 5 adjustment hole settings, measures 30mm x 18mm; stamped Seiko SQ in the same matt dark chocolate brown finish.
Production dates: Serial numbers seen range from 4Oxxxx to 4Dxxxx - October through December, 1984. Geography: Whereas this is nominally a world-wide export model, a high proportion of these seem to turn up on eBay in Italy. Buyers Tips: Like most of these similarly coated 7A38's, the dark brown / black chrome coating is vulnerable to wear, exposing the base metal. The orange pigments used in the bezel inlay and for 'SPORTS 100' are prone to fading (to yellow) with age / exposure to sunlight. Price Guide: $150 - $550 dependant upon condition. Yes, you need to use a strap notched to match the tube on the watch case, then hold it in place with screw bars or pressure rivet bars. Note Brad's own comment in his sales post: Comes with a Silicon strap but this does not fit well. The strap will be thrown in but it needs to be secured well it is not really designed for this watch. | |

There was some rubbing wear to the underside of the bracelet and clasp, but the bezel and dial printing looked relatively unfaded. However, some may have failed to notice (I did at first, till prompted by Simon) that the bracelet was rather short of adjustment links. I suspect it would barely stretch to 6¾" with the number I counted (15 links in total). I need 19 links for a comfortable fit on a 7½" wrist. Nor did the seller do himself any favours by listing it (only) on eBay Italy (without world-wide visibility) and only offering payment by Bank Transfer (with no PayPal option). An Italian seller and no PayPal .... well, would you have bid on it, if you'd seen the listing ? | |

Very remiss of me for not having previously updated this thread before. I can't remember now exactly what happened with Goffre78's speculatively over-priced NOS 7A38-6020. I HAVE SEEN MANY VINTAGE SEIKOS AMONG OTHER BRANDS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS MODEL. I HAVE SEEN SIMILAR ONES BUT NOT THIS LAYOUT AND IN BROWN PVD. Well perhaps then I'd suggest the would-be eBay seller should have a read of this thread ! But seriously - I make no apologies for uploading all 12 of the seller's superbly honest photos. They clearly show the level of rubbing wear to the vulnerable brown outer coating - through to the black chrome underneath and indeed the base metal in a few places. Comparing the cosmetic condition of this used example to the two that sold on eBay Italy in February 2012 (449 Euros - approx $610) and February 2013 (151 Euros - approx. $205) it falls about midway between them. So if we take a midpoint and say add on 20% for inflation, you're looking at around $500 as a sensible realistic asking price - compared to the seller's current 'pie-in-the sky' $2250. Having said that, no doubt it'll likely exceed that by some margin. | |

Bidding on that Italian eBay listing for a 7A38-6020 had reached 20 Euros or so - last time I looked at it yesterday. But then later in the evening, the auction was ended early, with all bids cancelled, including mine. It may appear to be almost mint - but 'Mega Rare' or worth anything like the 'pie-in-the-sky' B-I-N asking price ? I don't think so. This 7A38-6020 was listed a few hours ago (actually on eBay Germany, his preferred domain) by Italian eBay seller akarides: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111399473433 To buy a new watch from my collection I am selling a vintage SEIKO CHRONOGRAPH SPORTS 100 7A38 - 6020 reference. It is probably one of the rarest Seiko 7Axx Series Chronograph ever produced and quite impossible to find especially in these MINT conditions.
A really massive and impressive chronograph: diameter is about 42,5 mm, thicktness about 13,5 mm and weight about 135 gramms. This exceptionally rare version has an "unique" metal case and bracelet with BROWN coating, massive brown coated metal rotating bezel with orange numbers to measure diving times. Very particular matt brown dial with ORANGE writings; orange styled hands for the chronometer and matt gold for the watch; tritium on indexes and on the hands; original Hardlex domed crystal. The watch is complete with its original bracelet reference Z1207 with all links. All is in mint conditions: please note the brown coating that has really very minor signs of use and no wear as always happen on these vintage Seiko "coated" cases. Anyway I think that the photos speak more than every word. The caliber 7A38 is one of SEIKOs most popular ones and still sought-after as it is known for superb robustness, reliability and precision. The serial number (4Dxxxx) dates this watch to the 1984: all is in original conditions exactly as came out from the factory. All functions are working properly: the stop-functions are working fine and the hands are running back to 12 o'clock position as intended to when resetting. I will ship worldwide at the standard shipping cost. I'm offering this item as private seller since I am a watch collector: no warranty and no return, but watch is 100% original, exactly as described and pictured.
Please note that is really a very reluctant sell (I loved this watch and I know how much it is exceptionally rare) but I have to make funds to buy a vintage Zenith El Primero; for this reason I am also disposal to consider trades with a good vintage Primero
I set the buy it now price basing on the only similar watch sold on the web (as I said I think this model is almost unique or quite impossible to find).

The one to study particularly is the right side-on view, which shows the bezel is lightly scuffed around the '15' thumb-grip. As the seller has gone to the trouble of obsuring the last 4 digits of the 4Dxxxx seriall number, I'd strongly suspect this is the very same 7A38-6020, s/n 4D8274 which disappeared off eBay Italy two weeks ago - just without the finger-prints all over it. The eBay auction for that 'almost mint' brown-coated 7A38-6020 ended this earlier morning - two hours ago, while I was still in bed asleep. Typically, the bezel printing is faded to yellow, plus the acrylic inlay is spit at 30 (instead of at the bezel pip where it usually goes). What the condition of the bracelet is like, in tems of coating wear or number of adjustment links present, is anybody's guess. | |

but obviously bearing a very close family relationship, I ought to mention the 7A38-6020's (non-chrono') little brother.
Though I had no qualms about (not) settng my alarm, because I had a pretty good idea of the eventual outcome.
